Polyolefin foams with Lucofin®: High compatibility with many polymers, versatile and easy to process

Polyolefin foams have been conquering the market since the 1960s and complement the classic foams made of polyurethane and polystyrene. Thanks to their ease of processing, good chemical resistance and recyclability, polyolefins are the ideal material for foams that have to fulfil high requirements in terms of quality, performance and environmental friendliness. With Lucofin®, LUCOBIT offers you innovative and versatile copolymers based on ethylene butyl acrylate (EBA) for the production of foams. Their particular strengths lie in their mechanical properties at low temperatures. EBA foams are tough, flexible and resistant to many chemicals. Most polyolefin foams have a closed cell structure, which makes them ideal for applications where elasticity at low temperatures is important, such as packaging applications (frozen packaging), construction or insulation applications.

The excellent compatibility of Lucofin® with many other polymers makes it possible to modify other polymers to improve the low-temperature properties. The special grades we have developed offer excellent conditions for this.

Properties of polyolefin foam with Lucofin®

Lucofin® is an excellent choice for producing soft and elastic foams that retain their properties even at very low temperatures in combination with the otherwise semi-rigid low-density polyethylene (LDPE). For this purpose, between 10-50% polar copolymers are added to the formulation as modifiers. Elastic foams modified with Lucofin® are used in applications where a high degree of elasticity and flexibility is still required at low temperatures.

Versatile applications of elastic Lucofin® foams

Whether extrusion, injection moulding, physical or chemical foaming – our EBA copolymers are suitable for all foaming processes and applications. Flexible EBA foams are very versatile and can be used in various branches of industry. The wide range of applications is shown opposite.

  • Construction: Polyolefin foams can be used in construction projects for insulating buildings, filling cavities and sound insulation
  • Leisure and sports equipment: Foams with Lucofin® are suitable for the manufacture of sports mats, swimming aids and other leisure products
  • Packaging: Due to its excellent low-temperature behaviour, Lucofin® can be used particularly well as packaging in deep-freeze areas. Lucofin® can also be used here for the low-temperature modification of another polymer.
